I had to make a decision today that I am not okay with. I am a campaigner for reducing waste and making slow changes in your life to better the environment – but today I had to say this time, no, I have to choose thee wasteful option because my dental health depends on it.
I have never had the best of teeth, but I have been working with a dentist to take steps to improve them. Today I asked my dentist what he thought of me using a bamboo toothbrush and Zero Waste toothpaste.
I want to note that as a positive, he had nothing against them in general, he didn’t say that they were bad, or that they didn’t work, he just said that in my case, in order to help with the dental work that we have been doing, I need to be using an electric toothbrush and regular toothpaste.
This really upset me and put me into a spin – this would mean that I would have to continue to use plastic toothbrush heads for an electric toothbrush for the rest of my life, or until they invented a bamboo electric toothbrush (if anyone knows of anything like this PLEASE let me know in the comments). How could I preach the idea of Zero Waste, if I knew right now that I could never be 100% Zero Waste? Should I just give up, should I change my message, should I even reveal this to all of you, or should I just keep it to myself?
Well, that secret seemed like a burden that I didn’t want to have – and one that I shouldn’t keep either. I want to be transparent and honest with you all because I want you to know that if it is a choice between your health, and Zero Waste, it is okay to make the choice to protect your health. That one decision does not negate every Zero Waste choice that you have made or the choices that you will continue to make every day that will help the planet and the movement. While I say these things and I know that they are true, I want you to know that I am certainly still feeling bad about this, and for now, that’s okay – we are all on a journey and this journey has ups and downs for all of us.
