Mum’s are super hard to buy for as it is. They have lived a lot more life than us, and they seem to have everything that they need. So we tend to buy them arbitrary gifts like candles, homewares and other items that they probably have 6 of already. This year, why not buy her something that she really wants, and something that has low impact on the environment. Here are 5 things i know my mum would love this Mothers Day – and hopefully yours will too!
- An experience.
This is what i got my mum. We took her to a concert that she had really wanted to see. But it doesn’t have to be a concert – get something that is tailored to your mother. Buy her tickets to a meal or a movie she is looking forward to. Is she adventurous? Get her a rock climbing pass or book her in for bungee jumping. The options are endless, and at most, you might have to print a ticket.
- A gift voucher.
I grew up thinking that gift vouchers weren’t a very thoughtful gift. They were a last minute attempt, a forgotten gift, but actually, I LOVE getting gift cards. Whether its to my favourite bulk food store, an iTunes gift card or an Op Shop Gift voucher, deciding what store to get a gift card from can be highly personal and thoughtful.
- The gift of life.
No, I’m not talking about a baby. A plant is a great gift that will keep on giving. it can brighten up their yard, home or office space, and they will bring a smile to your mums face for as long as she can keep it alive. Speaking of which, buy something that you know will suit your mother. If she has a green thumb, go for it with something cool and crazy. If your mum is hopeless with plants, a happy plant, or some kind of cactus might be the way to go.
- Something OLD is something NEW!
Often, our parents hold on the broken items because they mean something to them. Maybe the item was from their childhood, maybe it was their parents, maybe it was just important – either way its their to stay. Why not try to fix the item. Check out the internet, there are many stores who will be able to get your mum’s special item working again. She will be reliving those memories from the good old days in not time!
- A way to their heart
Is through their stomach. Some mums are super into cooking, and some, like mine, are not. Why not take some weight off their shoulders and make them some food. Make a couple of dinners for them to freeze, can some foods for them or give them some fresh baked goodies. You could even host a dinner with the works. food cooked, leftovers stored and kitchen cleaned – there is nothing better than a night of being looked after.
I’d love to hear any other Zero Waste gifts you are getting your mum this Mothers day. Leave a comment below.
